Enabling FTP in php5

Hi,
How to enable ftp in php5.
php.net says,
"In order to use FTP functions with your PHP configuration, you should add the --enable-ftp option when installing PHP."
How to do this.

What version of php are you using, and how did you install it and what are you running it on? - this does make a difference
