Help for a non php thinker

Hi.
How ore even can you insert the following in to a php file.
<SCRIPT language=JavaScript>

</script>
Its a counter script and when i try to insert it in to a php or cgi file it wont display the page.
Any ideas of help would be greatly apreaciated.
