How to find Day Of Week

I imagine there's some slick funtion in PHP to find the day of week given a date.

2 questions.....

What's the correct way to get today's date?

What's the correct way to get the day (ie Monday, Tuesday, etc) given today's date?

I wan't to try to create a simple table calendar. No links, pop-ups or anything like that, just a simple calendar in table form.
