PHP Templates?

I come across this site 5 toe and I saw how they process all pages through only one 'index' file. I asked a buddy and he said that they used templates.

I found a few sites about templates, but I couldn't find anything that showed me the wrong and right way to do this.

I was hoping somebody here could shine the light.

I dont think what it's the best way to writing web project....
I'm use modernization by myself Pat template engine by php-tools.de
