cropping image without imagemagic

I have worked google some to find answers to cropping black borders from images without imagemagick. and in the end went to imagemagic k, but find huge variations between versions making it unsuitable for my use.


Does anyone know of resources or solutions for cropping black (not pure black) from around scanned images?
