Thinking of buying a server myself....

Hi

I am thinking of buying a server to host my own sites and others at somepoint.

I have taken a look at ebay for some and wondered if I should buy any of them?!
I do not want to buy something that is obsolite! also I have no idea what else I need apart from a high speed internet connection.

Can someone advise if I should be thinking more on getting a 'new' server instead of second hand ones, my thinking was to get small and learn small and build of what knowledge I gain along the way.

If i was to buy brand new and muck it up I am left with a possibly useless and expensive piece of hardware!

Thanks in advance for any support you may give me.

ok if u are goonna buy a server...
u need to think how huge load it will have?
do u have a server hosting company that takes co-location?

i would recommend HP Proliant servers as i just love them xD

If u are going to just play around u can get ur old PC or even a laptop work as a FreeBSD server (hey that thing runs on 4Mb RAM if needed)
I would suggest however putting a few GB ram in it and a merelly good processor (say 2Ghz) with a few hundred GBs of HD and some coolers.
That server will both be fast, easy to use and learn on and u can actually use it for others as well

Hi,

Thanks

I have seen on ebay a few servers going for next to nothing like 40 or 50 quid!!
if i was to get one of these and connect it to my broadband internet connection, currently with Virgin Media !

What would i need to do to get the dns running? i think i need to get a static ip address? or dont i ?

as you can see i am very new to all this, i have hosted my sites on other peoples servers for years and think it is time to save money and host it myself.

have you any more info that you can give me on the issue of an IP address and this dns thing that i still do not know much about.

thanks again for your help

Hi,

I have been having problems with my current host and feel it is time to host my site on my own server.
I do not expect to learn it all in a short time or even in the first year of having a server myself!
But to learn until i feel ok to host them for real. so i would host a dummy site, just a random site name to test it all out with to get the hang of it first.
I have been lookingat ebay for a while now and not really sure what i should be getting.

please could you tell me what sort of server i should be looking for as there are 1000's of them and i might end up getting something that is part of the server and not the server itself!

just a few links to some servers that you think may help me learn something before getting into hosting more often and maybe getting a brand new or better second hand server at a later date.

thank you in advance for your help and for your help so far.

cheers

Basicly a normal desktop PC can work as a server..
I mean u can buy justa normal desktop PC, with OK configuration and run a server...
It can be on 24/7 no problems..

In case you are going to do a REAL hosting..well..then u need a good server room with coolants and so on..but for learning basicly any PC will work.. nothing fancy actually...

Just get a PC with descent CPU , HDD and Enough RAM, basic VGA should be enough (built-in if present works just fine), Network card... you are done, ofc i would recommend having some nice coolers from the start =)
